Quantum Tunneling in Nuclear Fusion

چکیده
Recent theoretical advances in the study of heavy ion fusion reactions below the Coulomb barrier are reviewed. Particular emphasis is given to new ways of analyzing data, such as studying barrier distributions; new approaches to channel coupling, such as the path integral and Green function formalisms; and alternative methods to describe nuclear structure eeects, such as those using the Interacting Boson Model. The roles of nucleon transfer, asymmetry eeects, higher-order couplings, and shape-phase transitions are elucidated. The current status of the fusion of unstable nuclei and very massive systems are brieey discussed.

Tunneling through Coulombic barriers: quantum control of nuclear fusion
A general coherent control scheme for speeding up quantum tunneling of proton transfer through Coulombic barriers is analysed. The quantum control scenario is based on repetitive electron impact ionization pulses that affect the ensuing interference phenomena responsible for quantum dynamics and force the proton to tunnel into classically forbidden regions of configuration space. The scheme is ...
متن کاملTunneling of a composite object
The phenomenon of quantum tunneling is relevant in different areas of physics, from chemical reactions to nuclear fission and fusion below the Coulomb barrier. In most of the cases one has to deal with the tunneling of a complex object with internal degrees of freedom. In a one-dimensional model we investigate how an harmonically bound two-body system tunnels through an external gaussian barrie...
متن کاملSQUID-NMR study of methyl quantum tunneling in a series of carboxylic acids
Quantum tunneling frequencies of methyl groups at low temperature can be measured directly by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) using our d&QUID (superconducting quantum interference device) spectrometer. From NMR spectra recorded in magnetic fields below 20 mT, tunneling frequencies between I40 and 250 kHz were measured for a homologous series of carboxylic acids at 4.2 K. For solids ...

Fusion reactions below the Coulomb barrier provide new insights into multidimensional quantum tunneling, nuclear reaction dynamics and nuclear structure.1), 2) These reactions are also of considerable interest to nuclear astrophysics. The evolution of main sequence stars, in particular stellar nucleosynthesis is governed by subbarrier fusion.3) It may be worthwhile to review some of the basic a...
